Trading from late last Friday through Friday morning of this week
in Missouri, remains inactive as producers are passing lower bids this
week. Last Friday the packers received a gift from the CME cattle
futures as fund managers came out selling aggressively when cattle
futures opened. The thought of higher cash prices quickly faded as
cattle traded lower. Then a surprise move on Monday saw fed cattle trade
with live prices at 120.00 mostly 2.00 lower than last week, with trade
continuing over the next couple of days with the idea cattle futures were
heading lower. Cash trade is pretty much following the lower futures as
basis controls hedgers. There does seem to be a fear of what is to come
in the way of supplies of fed cattle. Forecasters and COF reports show
exceeding year ago levels. Dry conditions in the Southern Plains are
pushing more cattle into feedyards and off played-out wheat pastures.
Boxed-beef values continue to hold very well this week and could be
getting top heavy, but are helping packer margins. Beef demand remains
very important as more cattle are slaughtered the more current the beef
complex will need to be. Thursday Choice closed .99 cents lower at
209.07 with Select .28 cents lower at 202.95 compared to last Fridays
close with Choice at 209.51 and Select at 202.32. The hide and offal
value from a typical slaughter steer on Thursday was estimated at 10.86
per cwt live, .14 cents higher compared to Wednesdays close.
