Missouri Weekly Direct Slaughter Cattle (week end 10-04-2019)

Confirmed Sales:

Week to date: 160 Last week: 1040 Last Year: 360
( These prices acquired from Missouri producers )

Trading from late last Friday through Friday morning of this week
remains mostly at a standstill with a few grid sales trading 2.00-3.00
higher at 170.00, with most producers asking for higher bids. CME cattle
futures early in the week were in correction mode, but found solid
support on Wednesday. The cash rally in cattle prices over the last
couple of weeks probably has a lot to do with sizable packer margins.
With these excessive margins they have the capability to keep slaughter
levels lofty and move prices higher if they choose. Packers came out
with stronger bids on Thursday in Texas with live prices 3.00 higher at
106.00, with trade yet to take place in the Northern Plains. Cattle
feeders should feel more bullish as the market gains some momentum as the
cash market attempts to get back to pre-fire levels. Box beef values
are attempting to stabilize as they carve out a low. Retailers continue
to give beef a good run for the consumers dollar as pork and chicken are
finding good features. Choice boxed-beef closed Thursday .91 cents lower
at 212.06 with Select 1.31 higher at 187.21 with a Choice-Select spread
of 24.85, compared to last Fridays close with Choice at 212.58 and
Select at 189.86. The hide and offal value from a typical slaughter
steer on Thursday was estimated at 8.95 per cwt live unchanged when
compared to Wednesdays value.
